Ever opened a thread and weren't sure what all the buttons do? Here's a complete walkthrough of everything on a discussion page, using the Mess food thread as the example.

🔝 The Top Bar

At the very top you'll always find:

Back to Discussion List — takes you back to the main forum with all threads
Ashish logo — click it anytime to go straight to the homepage
Search box — type keywords like "mess", "updates", or "bot" to find any discussion fast
[If not loggedd-in] Sign Up / Log In — you need to be logged in to reply, vote, or post anything

📋 The Left Sidebar

On the left you'll see a list of other active discussions. Each one shows:

The thread title (e.g. Updates, Best Memes collections, What is a bot?)
Its tag — Announcements, General, Questions, Memes, or Lost & Found
Who posted or replied last, and the reply count

Click any title to jump to that thread. Click a tag like General to filter and see only posts under that category.

📌 The Thread Header

At the top of the main content area you'll see:

The tag (e.g. "General") — shows which category this thread belongs to; click it to see all posts under that tag
The thread title — e.g. "Mess food"
Log In to Reply button — if you're not logged in, click this first; once logged in it becomes the reply box
Share button — copies the link to this thread so you can send it to someone
Post counter — shows something like "1 of 5 posts / March 2026 / 0 UNREAD", telling you how many posts are in the thread, which one you're currently viewing, and how many you haven't read yet

💬 Inside Each Post

Every individual message in the thread has the same set of controls:

Username & avatar : Click/hover to view that person's full profile Post content

The actual message — can include text, opinions, @mentions

Upvote : when a post is helpful, good, or well-written — boosts that user's points

Downvote : Use only for spam, rude, or useless posts — not just because you disagree

Reply button : Starts a reply directly to that post so they know you responded to them specifically

Mention : Type @+username inside your message to notify someone (e.g. @admin )

✏️ How to Post a Reply

Scroll to the bottom of the thread
Click inside the "Write a Reply…" box
Type your message
Hit Post Reply (or the send button) to publish

To reply to a specific person — click the Reply button under their post rather than typing in the general box. They'll be notified that you responded to them directly.

To mention someone — type @ followed by their username while writing your message. They'll get a notification pulling them into the conversation.

👍 How to Use Votes Correctly

Upvote posts that are helpful, respectful, or add something valuable to the discussion — it also encourages others to upvote your posts back
Downvote only spam, rude comments, or completely useless replies — not simply because you have a different opinion
Votes affect the poster's points and ranking, so use them responsibly
